Carolina Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce

March 29, 2020 By Steven 2 Comments

Carolina BBQ Sauce is spicy and sweet with a tangy kick from mustard and vinegar. When it comes to smoked pork butt I don’t think there is a better sauce than a Carolina Honey Mustard BBQ sauce. Don’t let the yellow color freak you out, the smokiness of the slow-cooked pork combined with the subtle sweetness of my Carolina Mop Sauce, topped with my coleslaw recipe, this is the pulled pork sandwich you’ve been craving. Served on the side as a dipping sauce, my Honey Mustard BBQ Sauce recipe is just about the right size for a 4 or 5-pound pork butt, so I like to use fresh garlic and onions rather than garlic and onion powders. I prefer fresh ingredients whenever I can, however, if you plan on having leftover sauce and want to keep it for a while, I put the powdered spices as an option.

Ingredients in My Carolina BBQ Sauce

  • Honey: A key ingredient in honey mustard BBQ sauce, I always buy local honey to support local businesses. The honey is perfect on the smoked pork butt.
  • Yellow Mustard and Ketchup: I love the color of Carolina BBQ sauce. The yellow mustard gives it the color and a nice little kick of flavor.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar and Worchestershire Sauce: Together these add a nice tangy flavor perfect for pork, and anything else you like BBQ sauce on.
  • Garlic and Red Onion: You can use powdered spices if you like. I prefer to use fresh ingredients to really wake this honey-mustard BBQ sauce up and make it unique from the store-bought stuff. The way I see it, if you’re making a homemade BBQ sauce, you want it to be special!
  • Red Pepper Flakes: Honey mustard BBQ sauce needs a little spice to it. This adds heat and great flavor to the sauce.

Nothing is better with pulled pork than this honey mustard BBQ sauce recipe!

Can I use the apple jelly instead of the apple cider vinegar?

Hi Dave, Interesting question, I’ve never tried the apple jelly substitute. The apple jelly won’t have the same twang as vinegar, but the sweetness would be interesting with ribs and pulled pork. If you try it, let me know how it went.
