My Homemade Guacamole recipe is the result of years of experimentation. Everybody has their own way of making guacamole and there are very strong opinions as to what ingredients go into an authentic guacamole recipe; lime juice or no lime juice, cumin or no cumin, etc. etc. And everybody seems to have an opinion as to the best way to keep it from oxidizing and turning brown, I’ll tell you what I do.
I start by combining all the ingredients except the avocados, the salt and lime juice help draw out the moisture from the tomatoes and create a sort of a vinaigrette. This can be made hours in advance of when you actually plan on serving the guacamole and is a great time saver for party planning. When time to serve, simply add diced avocados and mix to combine, by mixing it fresh minutes before serving, you win the initial battle against it turning brown.
For leftovers, I do one of two things. First I place the guacamole in the storage container and spread the surface flat with the back of a spoon. Then I either press plastic wrap directly against the surface to prevent air from getting to it. Or if you like tomato salsa, I spoon a layer of salsa over the top of the guacamole, this also prevents direct contact with the air and helps prevent oxidation.
This is a very flexible, and I’m happy to say, healthy guacamole and ingredients can be added or subtracted based on your personal preferences. However, the recipe below is what I have found to be my ideal Homemade Guacamole recipe. Hopefully, you enjoy it as much as we do.
